Farmárom Lise a Glenovi sme pomáhali udržať čučoriedky „nad hladinou“ v mori buriny. Mojou úlohou bolo najmä plieť, Jančiho nakladať , voziť a rozhŕňať piliny okolo čučoriedkových kríkov, aby ich neprerástla „plevel“ . Keď boli unavení zaliezli všetci traja do auta a pozerali rozprávky.

Ich vytrvalosť a odhodlanie bolo až nákazlivé. Obdivuhodné bolo aj ich presvedčenie, že skutočnú kvalitu dosiahnu iba, ak ich čučoriedky budú bio. Kríky tu čelia viacerým chorobám a škodcom. Glen a Lisa nakupovali len biopostreky.

Glen a Lisa majú takmer päťdesiatku. V Glenovom zozname bolo to isté a ešte niečo navyše. Chcel mať dieťa. Lisa už mala dve dcéry v teenagerskom veku, no ako hovorí – sny si treba plniť. O dva roky na to kúpili veľké pozemky a postupne začali s pestovaním olív a čučoriedok.

Stále som to odkladala. Keď to budem stále len odkladať, navždy to bude len sen a nie realita,“ opísala mi Lisa a ja som jej súhlasne prikyvovala.

Two weeks ago we finished our wandering on the Southern Island and we anchored near Wellington on the Northern Island. We put on farmer’s straw hats, tucked up our sleeves and started working.Fortunately, there are four of us for the work. With Jakubko’s comments and Maroško’s “monkey businesses”, we have more than enough fun.We spent the first week on a blueberry-olive farm. The second week on the River Pa farm, where we have become real farmers with the complete menagerie.

Can there be fun at work?Just see how Maroško encourages Janči in the work with blueberry bushes.

“Angry sawdust will fight with weed.”

Everybody who has read the lovely interview with our Jakubko knows what sawdust is.Who missed it, do not hesitate and start reading the previous and also this article.  Our all week on the blueberry-olive farm in Wakanae was about the fight of sawdust with weed.We were helping farmers Lisa and Glen to keep blueberries “above the level” in the sea of weed.My task was mainly to weed, Janči’s task was to load, transport and spread sawdust around blueberry bushes so that the weed does not overgrow them.Sawdust was everywhere for the whole week.Even now I can shake it out from some trousers of our little wwoofers. But the work was great fun for our boys. The sawdust pile was a sandpit for them, and they had also a merry-go-round – the tractor they travelled on together with buckets of sawdust. The children had a playfellow for the first time, little Ebbie, six years old daughter of our farmers. When they were tired, all three got in a car and watched cartoons. It’s a joy to work when you can see that your children enjoy it as well.

A car is a very important space for our children. This is the only thing has not been changing in our adventurous life.

What have we learned?

One wouldn’t expect that he would learn anything during a week of weeding.Maybe not while working for money, but when you are wwoofing with farmers, that’s something else.We were working together. We were talking a lot, we have learned a lot, but mainly we have again moved forward thanks to the inspirational approach of the new family. To summarise it, I will start with how surprising and somehow even funny was the work around blueberries. It grows in our woods on its own, but it is hard to grow it in New Zealand.Glen and Lisa tried to reveal how to do it.For Slovaks, it was not so important how they took care of the bushes, but how much effort they made to receive reward in the form of sweet berries from those 650 bushes.Their persistence and resolution was almost infectious.Amazing was also their conviction that the real quality can be reached only if their blueberries are organic. The bushes here face various diseases and pests. However, there are sprays available for everything today.Glen and Lisa buy only organic sprays. For example, the spray against mildew was made of stinky seaweed and fish.

You should fulfil your dreams. Thanks to that little Ebbie is sitting on the tractor next to her parents.

Dreams should be fulfilled regardless your age

Glen and Lisa are almost fifty.Ten years ago, at the beginning of their relationship, both of them wrote a list of dreams they wanted to fulfil. The exchanged and compared the lists.Lisa’s dream was to live in the countryside and to have a farm,The Glen’s list included the same and something more.He wanted a child.Lisa already had two teenage daughters, but as she says – dreams should be fulfilled. Two years later they bought large lots and started growing olives and blueberries.A half a year later they sired a child – daughter Ebbie. Both of them were after forty and decided to start fulfilling their dreams.I explained to Lisa that in my country people probably would not dare to start from the beginning in their age.I asked whether they did not feel too old.“Definitely not.In New Zealand, nobody would tell you he is too old for something, rather he is more experienced.”

Everything started by a list of unfulfilled dreams exchanged between the partners. They have managed to check their biggest dreams – a farm and a child.

Perfect plan

That was exactly visible on their perfectly thought out dream fulfilment. They have not started with farming recklessly, but they had elaborated a very detailed business and growing plan.First, they made a market survey and found out that blueberries were grown only at three places in the country so there was a big demand. They studied everything about this plant and started with preparation of a lot for growing. They plant blueberries to be picked by customers. When they become ripe people may come to their farm and pick any quantity. Not to have income only once a year, they have decided also for another alternative – olives.Again, the selection was not random but very well thought out.“Blueberries need care especially from November to spring, olives from May to August. After August, there are three free months. We use them for travelling and relaxing,” explained Lisa.

Glen and Lisa accommodated us in the Lisa’s father’s house; he was on holiday that time.We had a common dinner after his arrival. Also Lisa’s older daughter came.

Also they were started by burnout

“I was dreaming about own farm.I was postponing it all the time.First I had little children, then I missed money, always something. After a demanding year at work I decided to get cracking. If I only postpone it, this dream will never come true,” described Lisa and I gave an affirmative nod.I know very well, what a demanding period of time is, and I also know the condition she described as burnout. She experienced the same like we few months ago – a total burnout, tiredness of life. This is why I was so addressed by their life restart.I was assured that dreams should be fulfilled regardless of our age, regardless of the age of our children.Fulfilled dreams give us happiness and what else would you wish for your family.
